A circular route through Goričko winds across rolling hills, scattered villages, forests, and the borderland where Slovenian and Hungarian cultural heritage intertwine. Starting in Kančevci, the route leads past the Romanesque rotunda in Selo, through the bilingual villages of Prosenjakovci and Motvarjevci, and along forest paths to Lake Bukovnica. Most of the route follows quiet local roads and forest gravel tracks with gentle climbs.
Points along the route
Kančevci
0 km

Pri Momi
The route starts at the Pri Momi homestead in Kančevci, home to a restored traditional Prekmurje timber-framed house. The route soon leaves the village and follows gravel roads through the forests, vineyards and scattered hamlets of southeastern Goričko.

Through the Goričko Hills
From Kančevci, we continue along quiet local and gravel roads winding between meadows, fields and woodland edges.

Bilingual Goričko Borderland
After Selo, we approach the Slovenian-Hungarian border and cycle through the bilingual villages of Prosenjakovci and Pordašinci.

Matzenau Manor
Not far from the route, in the forest above the village, stands the abandoned Matzenau Manor. Once a 19th-century hunting residence, it has survived as a ruin. Remnants of the former architecture, including the façade, balcony and heraldic decoration, are still visible. Due to the building's deteriorated condition, entering the interior is not recommended.

Lake Bukovnica
18 km

Lake Bukovnica
The main highlight of the route is Lake Bukovnica, a popular recreational spot surrounded by beech and chestnut forests. The lake was created by damming a stream, and a forest educational trail runs around it. Picnic areas are available along the shore.

Chapel of St. Vitus and St. Vitus Spring
Above the lake stands the Chapel of St. Vitus, built in 1828, with St. Vitus Spring located just below it. According to local tradition, the spring water is believed to help with eyesight problems, and visitors still wash their eyes with it today. The area around the chapel is also known for its so-called energy points.

From Lake Bukovnica, the route continues through forests and scattered hamlets back towards Kančevci. The final kilometres complete the loop at the Pri Momi homestead, where the route began.
